A royal first

Today in 1992, prime minister John Major told the House of Commons the Queen had informed him that she wished to make changes to her tax arrangements and pay income tax for the first time since the 1930s. Since 2001 the monarchy has published its annual accounts in an attempt to make royal finances more transparent. The Sovereign's duties as head of state continue to be funded with public money.  The Sovereign Grant Act of 2011 introduced the Sovereign Grant paid annually to the monarch by the government in order to fund the monarch's official duties.  It was the biggest reform to the finances of the British Royal Family since the inception of the Civil List in 1760. For 2022-3, the Sovereign Grant was £86.3M.
